Branches FAQ

Questions about the branches

What are the main branches of philosophy?

The six main branches are: Metaphysics (what exists and what it is like), Epistemology (what knowledge is and how we get it), Ethics (what is right and wrong), Logic (the rules of correct reasoning), Aesthetics (what beauty and art are), and Political Philosophy (the basis of legitimate authority). Stanford has a concise overview of the discipline ↗.

What is the difference between ethics and political philosophy?

Ethics asks what individuals should do and what makes actions right or wrong. Political philosophy asks how society should be organised — questions about justice, authority and rights. They overlap: the ethics of harm, for example, feeds directly into debates about law. The SEP entry on political philosophy ↗ gives a good overview of the distinction.

What is epistemology and why does it matter?

Epistemology is the study of knowledge — what it is, what its sources are (reason, experience, testimony), and what its limits are. It matters because every factual claim presupposes some view about how we can know things. Scepticism — the challenge that we might know nothing — is the field's central puzzle. The SEP's epistemology entry ↗ is the standard starting point.

Is logic a branch of mathematics or philosophy?

Both. Formal logic developed in parallel in mathematics and philosophy and the fields overlap heavily. Philosophy's interest is in what makes an argument valid or invalid, what follows from what, and the nature of logical necessity. The SEP entry on classical logic ↗ covers the formal side; the IEP entry on informal logic ↗ covers argument analysis in ordinary language.
