Questions about Metaphysics

What is metaphysics in simple terms?

Metaphysics asks what exists and what it is like at the most fundamental level — including questions about time, causation, mind, and identity. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy gives a thorough academic overview.

Is free will a metaphysical question?

Yes. Free will sits at the intersection of metaphysics and ethics. The core metaphysical debate is whether determinism — the view that every event is caused by prior events — is compatible with genuine choice. See our free will guide for the three main positions.

What is the mind-body problem?

The mind-body problem asks how mental states (thoughts, feelings) relate to physical states (brain processes). Descartes argued they are distinct substances — a view called dualism. Most contemporary philosophers favour some form of physicalism. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy article on dualism covers the positions in depth.
